You're not trying to control him. You're trying to create closeness.

This morning, for my husband Jack's s 40th birthday, I wrote him a long love note. I know words like that are a lot for him to receive, and so he only half received it. I didn't take it personally. I know that's a him thing, not a me thing.

A few hours later, he came up to me and said, "come here." He pulled me in and started thanking me — for the life we've built, for the way I'm there with him and for him, for how much I trust him. He was making promises to me, right there, with no lead-up. And I noticed myself receiving it. And then I noticed myself saying things like, "I trust you."

That's the dance.

Between speaking from the giving and speaking from receiving (different centres in your body).

And here's what I want you to know: you don't have to get into your head about which one to use. When you're actually connected to the moment — to what's being said and what you're saying back — you will very naturally shift between the two.

It's not that complicated.

That's the whole practice. Not a technique you perform on him but learning to speak — and to receive — from a place true enough that he can't help but move toward it.

You're intelligent, self-aware, and you've done the inner work…but it feels hard to draw on this wisdom when it comes to him.

You replay conversations before they happen, rehearsing exactly what to say.

You explain one way, then another, then add more context "just in case he doesn't get it."

A simple conversation has turned into an hour-long spiral more than once.

You don't want to play games or hide your needs. You want to say what you mean, trust yourself, and know when enough has been said.
